How to Choose Quilling Paper Width

Quilling paper width is a personal preference, and there is no rule for width. Below are some common uses for each width.

Make a shape in varying widths for your project. Place it on your work surface and see how the light casts shadows or reflects the color, and choose based on what you prefer.

How to Choose Quilling Paper Weight

When I first started quilling, I used conventional quilling paper, and made smaller projects such as greeting cards.

When I started quilling letters, I preferred using Canson Mi-Teintes, because the heavier weight of paper was easier to make straighter, long edges. Conventional quilling paper seemed wavy in comparison.

I also tend to use Canson Mi-Teintes for larger projects, such as 8 x 8 inch framed items because my shapes tend to be larger, in ratio with my project size.

When shopping for paper weight, it can be confusing because there are two systems of paper weight. North America uses lb, and internationally, it tends to be in gsm. Below is a table that shows typical paper and the weight in both.
